Booking Holdings Loses Investor Vote on Environment Progress Report

Speaking at Booking’s yearly shareholder meeting June 3, sustainability advocate David Shugar indicated Booking’s 2020 sustainability report in which it declared it became carbon neutral that year, and he said without Reserving in fact lowering its carbon emissions, dependence on carbon offsets “is insufficient.”

“Making use of carbon offsets, rather of actual emission reduction targets, makes it tough to solve environment change at a worldwide level and does not prepare the business to meet the difficulties and chances of a carbon-constrained economy,” Shugar said.

Environment activists keep that failure to sufficiently attend to a business’s carbon footprint can have a materially unfavorable influence on a company’s financials.

In recommending that investors vote down the advisory proposal, however, Reserving stated: “We plan to stay carbon neutral in our operations progressing, and anticipate making development on our sustainability technique, including variety and inclusion and sustainable travel.”

Another shareholder proposal that required Booking to carry out an annual vote on the company’s environment techniques and policies was defeated. That vote was 11.67 million in favor, 19.47 million opposed, and there were more than 3.1 million abstentions, and 1.43 million broker non-votes.

Reservation Holdings opposed that investor proposition, also.
