Scrap charges are a hot button issue in the travel industry, and here are some notable declarations several executives made at Skift Global Forum.

So-called scrap fees have been in the leading edge of many travel executives’ minds, especially after the Biden administration took objective at charges tourists increasingly see as unnecessary and excessive.

We asked numerous leaders about the issue at the Skift Global Forum in New York City. Here’s what they said:

Brian Chesky, Airbnb CEO

“I believe that you wish to be as basic as possible for the customer and you want to do what’s finest for them. And so in Europe, rates are managed so everybody displays prices the same method. But this scrap charge or drip rates, whatever you wish to call it, is primarily a U.S. phenomenon.”

“And the issue we had for years was we wished to move to more transparent prices, but when we did tests, people would concern Airbnb and they ‘d see rates different than other websites and they didn’t know why they were various and they didn’t realize, well in fact we’re not more costly. We’re simply including the fees in advance.”

“So we were trying to determine a way to inform the consumers that we’re going to upfront pricing since it’s easy, it’s finest for the client and it likewise, we do not wish to create unintended consequences.”

“This upfront rates model, with ranking the very best overall nightly (rate), is essentially extremely near the perceived elimination of cleansing costs.”

Chris Nassetta, Hilton CEO

“We’re going to give total transparency; we’re reviewing and above. In the end, we do not want customers puzzled about what they’re buying or what they’re paying for. But the concern is complicated. In the hotel space, the majority of us are going towards the right place, but a lot of our items are dispersed through third-party channels.”

“The OTAs and metasearch, all of us require to be in the very same location, it doesn’t matter if Hilton shows it the right way, due to the fact that the majority of the population starts on Google for comparison shopping. They’re going to be deceived even before they get to us. My view is an even playing field. The product is the item, and it needs to be shown the same way.”

Peter Kern, Expedia Group CEO

“You know, in the old days you had a wholesale rate due to the fact that you were attempting to bring traffic from China to Chicago or Chicago hotels. So you put an unique rate in the modern world. That rate ends up everywhere. And rather of being just for certain travel agents in China, it’s all over. And that’s not what you mean and that’s bad for your company.”

“I think, you understand, we have actually turned off a couple of partners here and there in time for a variety of factors that frequently have to do with violent rates or sales practices, sometimes motivated by our supply partners who don’t like what is taking place or what’s taking place at their hotels.”

“When people show up with those prices from those locations, so so, you understand, if somebody is abusing the customer, using bad sales practices, abusing rates, they need to expect to be shut off.”

Spencer Rascoff, 75 & Sunny Ventures co-founder and CEO

“This resembles the whack a mole thing that our market has actually been has been going through … I fret for the online travel market that what we have actually sort of dragged our feet on for 20-plus years could actually end up being an issue.”

“And you can imagine a class action lawsuit of the billions of dollars of extra fees the travelers have paid over the years, unknowingly, and just wait till complainant’s attorneys get stars in their eyes on those kinds of numbers. And who understands where that where that goes. So beware.”

David Neeleman, Breeze Airways CEO

“It’s simply something that our guys chose to do and it seems to be working, but it is a little bothersome. But we do have a technology cost, so that’s one of the one frustrating ones. Whatever else, we do not have a change charge,” Neeleman stated when inquired about the business’s technology development charge.
